City of Harahan Strengthens Hurricane Preparedness Through Regional Collaboration

As Louisiana’s hurricane season approaches, Harahan Police Chief Ed Lepre hosted the City of Harahan’s annual Hurricane Preparedness Meeting, bringing together local and regional leaders to review emergency response plans and strengthen coordination efforts ahead of potential storm events.
Representatives from the City of Harahan, Jefferson Parish, the City of Kenner, the Jefferson Parish School System, and the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) participated in the meeting, contributing valuable expertise and collaborative strategies to enhance the City's readiness for the upcoming hurricane season.

Chief Lepre opened the discussion by reviewing critical preparedness measures, including the status of emergency generators, food and water supplies, fuel allocation, debris removal operations, and key evacuation and access routes throughout the city. These conversations emphasized the importance of proactive planning and interagency coordination to ensure the City of Harahan is prepared to respond effectively to severe weather events and other emergencies.

Mayor Tim Baudier continued the discussion by reflecting on the City’s experiences during previous hurricanes, particularly Hurricane Ida. He highlighted the steps taken to restore operations following the storm and encouraged attendees to share recommendations for improving current emergency preparedness and recovery plans. The collaborative exchange of ideas focused on strengthening the City’s ability to protect residents, maintain essential services, and support recovery efforts during and after major weather events.
Councilmen Chatelain, Ricks, Budde, and Asbill also participated in the discussions, offering suggestions, asking questions, and helping refine preparedness strategies to ensure the City remains equipped to meet future challenges.

The meeting concluded with an open forum that allowed all participating agencies and representatives to provide additional feedback and recommendations. Ray Guidry, Director of Emergency Management for Jefferson Parish, shared valuable insights based on his extensive experience managing hurricane response efforts, emphasizing best practices in emergency preparedness, public outreach, and regional cooperation.
